Creature Being

PART II | An earlier epic carving project for Marcus Tatton was that of Creature Being

A 5m-long skeletal figure of a mythical beast carved from what was a 14m log, painstakingly hollowed right out until it was rather like a rib cage, then worked into a lattice of arabesques see the scale from the photograph showing Marcus Tatton standing next to this amazing piece.

Once the vast mass had been reduced to a size Marcus estimated he could transport on his trailer, it was hauled from its desecrated forest setting with the help of a friend and tractor.

Today Creature Being is at home on the track to Split Rock near the start of the Meander Falls track.

One imagines that the alpine forested areas there once supported great megafauna easts crashing amonst the ancient rocks and waterways.

As Marcus says: Creature Being is a vestigial notion as we feel primal in such environments.

This sculpture is part of the Great Western Tiers Sculpture trail, where visitors can follow maps to several isolated natural reserves.

Special places in the world, Marcus says, allow us to reflect on prehistroic ages and our tiny part we now play in the greater order of creation.
