On the fly

Launcestonian Jonathan Stagg has won the Australian fly fishing championships for the third time in five years.

Tasmania also won the teams event.

More than 65 anglers from throughout Australia took part in the competition held at various rivers and lakes around Tasmania.

Mr Stagg says he is now working towards competing in the 2007 world championships in Finland.

“It’s something I’ve been passionate about ever since I was 11 or 12-years-old and I’ve put a lot of work in to get good at it and competition angling is just a different side of it, I guess,” he said.

“Not everyone goes for it, but I’m a competitive type of person and really enjoy a competitive side of the fishing.”
