Antarctica 2007 calendars
Just four months old and already weighing 140kg, this Southern elephant seal, takes it easy on Macquarie Island while posing for Iain Field, a contributor to Antarctica 2007: Images of a Frozen Land — the popular calendar produced in Tasmania.
Elephant seal pups, born between September and October, are weaned after just 24 days of suckling, gaining a staggering 80kg over this time. Usually living to 20 years, males can grow to nearly 4000kg, while females weigh a mere 600kg.
A team of five photographers contributed to this year’s calendars, shown here, including self-confessed Antarctica addict Lyn Irvine, who we feature in a special portfolio.
Both calendars are available direct from their web site.
