Tasmanian photographer’s national award

The stunning image below, taken at Port Davey, comes from a portfolio of four Tasmanian landscape photographs that have earned a prestigious national award for Hobart photographer Geoffrey Lea.

Port Davey — Gold Distinction

Geoffrey was awarded the Canon/AIPP Landscape Photographer of the Year for 2006 at a gala function at Sydney’s Darlign Harbour. One of his images, of sea breaking over rocks taken at Port Davey in Tasmania’s South West, was ranked in the top ten across all categories (more than 1500 images) and gained a Gold Distinction.

The award is part of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography’s (AIPP) annual Australian Professional Photographer of the Year Awards, which also includes categories for wedding, portrait, industrial and advertising photographs. The overall award this year was won by Sydney-based car photographer Urs Bulhman.

Geoffrey was Tasmanian Professional Photographer of the Year in 2003. He has been publishing his landscape work in Tasmanian posters and postcards since 1989. His pictures have appeared in national and international magazines and on Australian stamps.

Geoffrey said “Tasmanian images were over-represented in the landscape category, not because there were a lot of Tasmanian entrants, but because photographers come from all over Australia to photograph our beautiful island. “Fortunately I have the advantage of local knowledge and time on location.”

Geoffrey urged the Tasmanian government to do more to protect Tasmania’s landscape values, particularly those in areas outside national parks. “Everybody who comes to Tasmania says how beautiful it is, yet there is no whole of government approach in place to protect that enormous cultural and economic asset”.
